History
The Tamoil Group was formed in 1988 and since its formation it has developed both its refining and marketing activities. Its development is briefly outlined below as follows:
-
Italy: In 1988 the Tamoil Group acquired a majority interest in Tamoil Italia S.p.A., a refining and marketing company with a crude oil refinery in Cremona, logistical infrastructure in northern Italy, and a network of 774 service stations throughout the country. Tamoil’s Italian retail network was further developed through a number of acquisitions. The first acquisition was Fina in 1992, when the Tamoil Group acquired 196 service stations in Sardinia, Calabria and Friuli, followed by the acquisition of 304 service stations from the Cameli Group in 1993. The retail network underwent further significant expansion in the years 2001-2003 through the acquisition of 514 service stations from AGIP (now ENI) group. These acquisitions, together with the participation to tenders for motorway concessions, have resulted in the Tamoil Group operating approximately 1,900 service stations in Italy. In the wholesale market Tamoil Italia S.p.A. has developed its operations through regional marketing organisations.
-
Switzerland: In 1990, the Tamoil Group took over the Gatoil refinery in Collombey and a service station network with more than 250 service stations. As at the end of 2009 there were 324 Tamoil outlets in Switzerland operating under Tamoil S.A. 2002-2003 were significant years in the history of Tamoil in Switzerland with the construction of the catalytic cracking unit at the Collombey refinery and the Tamoil re-branded network acquired from Elf. The Tamoil Group developed an important presence in the wholesale sector through its shareholdings in regional distributors operating within the various Swiss cantons.
-
Germany: In 1991 the Tamoil Group bought a majority stake in a refinery located in the city of Hamburg, which became wholly owned in 2002. After the acquisition, the refinery was modernised and between 2000 and 2003 new plants for desulphurisation and dearomatisation were built improving the quality of transportation fuels. Another significant development in Germany in the 1990’s was the acquisition of a retail distribution network today known as Deutsche Tamoil GmbH. Through the years, Deutsche Tamoil GmbH restructured, upgraded and expanded its retail network and today still pursues its dual brand strategy. In 2007, with the purchase of 55 service stations, Deutsche Tamoil GmbH increased its retail network by nearly 21% which, following the acquisition in 2008 of a further 53 service stations from the ‘GO’ Group, increased Deutsche Tamoil GmbH’s retail network in Germany to approximately 390 service stations.
-
Spain: The Tamoil brand came to Spain in October 1992 when the first Tamoil service station was opened in Benifallet (Cataluna) and the Tamoil Group continued to acquire service stations through Tamoil España S.A. The Tamoil Group currently has approximately 30 service stations in Spain. In 1993 the company moved its headquarters from its original site in Madrid to Barcelona, in order to be close to the ports along the Mediterranean coast where supplies can be guaranteed through both the local facilities and imports.
-
The Netherlands: The Tamoil Group’s entry into the Dutch petroleum market was through its acquisition, in 1993, of the OK Beheer B.V. group of companies who owned a network of “OK” branded service stations. Today the principal Tamoil Group company operating in The Netherlands is Tamoil Nederland B.V. (known until 2003 as OK Nederland B.V.) which has followed a twin brand policy in the Dutch market, using the Tamoil brand for its larger service stations and retaining the “OK” brand for its smaller sites. From the end of 2003 the majority of sites were Tamoil branded. In 2005, Tamoil Nederland B.V. further expanded its retail network with the acquisition of an additional 89 service stations and currently has approximately 160 service stations.
