CollombeyThe Swiss Collombey refinery is located in the canton of Valais at Collombey-Muraz on the left bank of the Rhône. The loading facilities and a number of storage tanks are situated on the other side of the Rhône in the canton of Vaud which are linked to the Swiss Federal Railways network. The Collombey refinery is supplied with crude oil by a 340 km oil pipeline linking the port of Genoa to Collombey. After the acquisition of the refinery in 1990, Tamoil carried out major developments to its technical infrastructure and introduced modern production techniques. In 2004, the construction of the refinery’s total residue conversion units was completed. This project includes a catalytic cracking unit that converts residues into high value light products. As part of the project, some of the existing units in the refinery were modernised, therely reducing sulphur and nitrous oxide exhaust emissions and consequently enabling the refinery to meet the 2005 petrol and diesel specifications in accordance with Swiss law. The refinery currently produces unleaded 95 and 98 octane petrol, diesel oil, extra-light and heavy heating oil, kerosene and liquefied petroleum gases. In 2006, the Collombey refinery processed more than 2.4 million metric tons of crude oil. The refinery production accounts for approximately 41% of total oil products refined in Switzerland and therefore plays a key role in the oil sector of the country. The refinery has 90 storage tanks with a total capacity of 795,000 cubic metres for crude oil and products.
